Karlovy Vary Tradition and Culture

Karlovy Vary Tradition and Culture

Each region has its own traditional products. But not everybody boasts so many products that are famous for the Czech Republic all over the world. Products mainly from local sources processed by original recipes and technologies are the living heritage of the Karlovy Vary Region. Traditional products, which are inherently connected with Karlovy Vary, include mainly glass and porcelain production, as well as the production of a well-known herbal liqueur, bottling of mineral water or the aroma of traditional spa wafers.

Moser
The history of the glassworks Moser is associated with the name of one of the most prominent characters in the history of glassmaking, Ludwig Moser (1833-1916). He first opened his own shop and engraving workshop in the center of Karlovy Vary, but in 1893 he started to operate in his own glassworks production, which still works successfully today. During this short time he gained the reputation of the most prestigious crystal producer in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Already in 1922, Moser Glassworks became the largest manufacturer of luxury beverage and decorative glass in Czechoslovakia. The success of Ludwig Moser consists in the production of environmentally pure unleaded crystal, a unique color spectrum, excellent design by the most prestigious artists and the perfect handmade processing of all crystal products.

Becherovka
The origin of Becherovka's traditional and high-quality herbal liqueur dates back to the early 19th century, when the chemist Josef Vitus Becher made this excellent liqueur, which bears his name - Becherovka. He was twice married and fathered 16 children. One of his sons, Jan Nepomuk Becher, took over his father's trade. Jan is considered to be the founder of the company; he has supported the development and production of Becherovka for nearly 40 years. Today, Becherovka is a traditional alcoholic beverage, and a completely natural product. It is made of renowned Karlovy Vary water, the highest quality spirits, natural sugar and specific spice mixtures and herbs.

Karlovy Vary porcelain
The term "Karlovy Vary Porcelain" means not only a long tradition of nearly 220 years, but also quality and world fame. The basic raw material - kaolin has one of the highest qualities in the region of Karlovy Vary and is processed at such a high level. It is a very demanded article for large, demanding, hand-painted vases and small decorative objects, as well as reproductions of works of art of world artists in porcelain. Some producers of porcelain in the Karlovy Vary Region include Leander 1966 Loučky, Moritz Zdekauer in Stara Role, König porcelain in Svatav, Thun 1794 or Haas and Czjzek in Horní Slavkov - the first porcelain factory in Bohemia.

Mattoni
Karlovarské minerální vody, a.s. Is the largest producer of mineral and spring water in the Czech Republic. A native of Karlovy Vary, Heinrich Mattoni, founded the company in 1873. It gained current form in the 1990s thanks to significant investments by new owners. Karlovy Vary mineral water is currently bottling mineral and spring water for Mattoni, Magnesia and Aquila, which are exported to more than 20 countries around the world. Karlovy Vary's mineral waters are the most endeavoring to build a world-renowned brand with a strong image that contributes to improving the quality and culture of drinking not only in the Czech Republic.

Karlovy Vary wafers
Spa wafers inherently belong to the spa life. Sources from the end of the 18th century state that wafers were a popular sweet delicacy among residents. Legend has it that a well-known chef from the Tepla monastery stands behind the birth of this famous delicacy. When he received the task to prepare a dessert in the 18th century, he thought to make a simple wafer in the appliance, sprinkled with sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and chopped nuts. He added a second wafer and combined them with eachother. Nowadays, you can enjoy this sweet treat in the city and its surroundings.
